Various Piazzas, or Squares, represent different aspects of Rome and Roman culture. Piazza del Campidoglio is the Italian Government headquarters; Piazza Venezia symoblises the 'heart of the city'; Piazza Navona is home to some magnificent Baroque architecture; Piazza di Spagna and its legendary Spanish steps is a true masterpiece of the 18th century, and last but by no means least, the legendary St Peter's Square is the gateway to St Peter's Basilica and the heart of Christianity.

There are 19 basilicas in Rome. Rome's most famous basilica is St Peter's Basilica - the world's largest basilica of Christianity. St John in Lateran (San Giovanni Laterano) is the former seat of the bishop's residence, and Santa Maria Maggiore is the world's most ancient church.

Ancient Rome was the site of many magnificent buildings and structures. One of Imperial Rome's most impressive buildings, the Pantheon was originally built in dedication to "all the gods". The elliptical-shaped Colosseum was the largest structure of its type in the ancient Rome, and took 10 years to build. It would have been the centre of entertainment in Ancient Rome, where the gladiators and animals would fight to the death, and is today undoubtedly the top tourist attraction in Rome.

Rome is a great destination for lovers of theatre and opera. From small, "underground" productions to grand performances in prestigious institutions such as Teatro Argentina or Sistina, there is something for everyone.
