Bangkok is a city with many layers. Amongst its climate controlled shopping malls and glistening skyscrapers are beautiful Buddhist temples and giant golden statues. Tuk-tuks and rickshaws dodge in and out of slow moving lines of shiny blacked out cars. It's easy to get there with cheap Bangkok flights.
Temples are a fundamental part of Thai culture, and Bangkok's are its heart and soul. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, or Wat Phra Kaew, is considered to be the most important temple in the whole of Thailand. Located within the grounds of The Grand Palace, it is a must see Bangkok attraction. The Temple of Dawn, or Wat Arun, is a spectacular sight at sunrise. Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) lies behind the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and is the largest temple in Bangkok. The Reclining Buddha itself measures 46m and is wrapped in gold leaf. Wat Traimit, or the Temple of the Golden Buddha, is home to the largest golden seated Buddha in the world, weighing over five tonnes.
Bangkok's culture is also reflected in its incredible palaces and mansions. One of the most important and popular cultural attractions in Bangkok is the Grand Palace, a breathtaking feat of architecture and the one sight you should not leave Bangkok without visiting. Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall is a majestic white marble palace on Dusit's Royal Plaza, and Ladawan Palace on Ratchasima Road has been restored and reopened to the public, and is well worth a visit.
One of the best ways to get around Bangkok is on its wonderful waterways. The Chao Phraya River is as much of a Bangkok landmark as the Grand Palace and Reclining Buddha, as well as being a very efficient and picturesque means of transport between Bangkok's many cultural attractions.
